Heading into 2023, photo editors and gallerists are craving work they haven’t seen before—and in many cases, they’re evaluating that work through fresh eyes. Their perspectives have shifted. “Looking at pictures, after everything we've been through (and are still going through), has a bit of a different feeling to me now,” Sophie Butcher, a Photo Editor at The New York Times, recently told us.

“What I mean to say is, I'm not taking life, or pictures, or art for granted. I’m bored of pretty and am looking to scratch under the surface a little. I want to see what moves you.”

We asked photo editors, gallerists, and publishers—ranging from various corners of the industry—that same question: what do they want to see from photographers in 2023? Whether coming from a senior visuals editor at Rolling Stone or the owner of a leading commercial art gallery, their responses surprised us.
