How a Photographer's First Commission Landed Him the Cover of Smithsonian Magazine
When the photographer Javier Piñero first set out to document the work of artisans across Puerto Rico, he could hardly have known that he was embarking on a journey that would ultimately land him the cover story of the June 2023 issue of Smithsonian Magazine. That path would lead him from the furniture workshops of the Villalobos family and the pottery workshop of Alice Chéveres to the Bomba dance and music performances run by the non-profit Taller Tambuyé. Throughout his travels, he was guided by a steadfast hope to safeguard their historic and irreplaceable knowledge for generations to come.
Beyond building connections with the artisans, Piñero—who also works in PR—knew he had to find the right publication to amplify their stories. After extensive research, he put together a carefully crafted pitch, including relevant stats and a timeline for the project (we’ve included the email below). From there, the story—Survived by Few—found a home in Smithsonian Magazine. It was Piñero’s first commission.
From the importance of doing your research to the elements of a great story, here’s what emerging photographers can learn from his experience.
