40 Open Calls and Opportunities in Photography: Our Monthly Guide
This edition of our opportunities newsletter kicks off with a once-in-a-lifetime artist residency in the high-Arctic, held aboard a Barquentine sailing vessel; an award offering a solo exhibition in New York City; and a $25,000 cash prize. Further in, you’ll find additional exhibition opportunities in London, Los Angeles, Venice, Barcelona, Łódź, and beyond, with open calls for experimental photographers, science photographers, fine artists, portraitists, and more. Plus, one of the most prestigious prizes in photojournalism—previously granted to pioneers like Don McCullin and James Nachtwey—opens for another year.
This annual residency brings together artists and scientists for a sailing expedition to the Svalbard Archipelago and the Arctic Ocean: “The program provides the opportunity for artists and innovators to pursue their personal projects on board while exploring collaborations with the expedition’s fellow participants.” The autumn expedition will take place from October 2nd to 19th, 2023, and applications are open through January 15th, 2023.
The overall winner of the Professional competition at the Sony World Photography Awards will take home $25,000, with additional prizes of Sony equipment, flights and accommodations for the awards ceremony in London, inclusion in the accompanying book and exhibition, and more going to selected photographers. The deadline for the Professional competition is January 13th, and the Open competition (for single images) closes on January 6th.

The Aperture Portfolio Prize is back, with $3,000, a feature in Aperture Magazine, a $1,000 gift card to mph.com, and a New York exhibition going to one winner selected by the editorial staff. 25 finalists will receive a portfolio review with an editor from Aperture.
