20 Photobook Publishers to Know (and Send Your Work To!)
Part 1 of our guide to photobook publishers
Through speaking with photobook publishers in recent weeks, we heard about photographers who, after publishing their first book, went on to find gallery representation, sign on with an agent, or connect with editors who reach out down the road with major assignments. While exhibitions are temporary, books last forever.
Photobooks also transcend boundaries and genres in that they’re read by fine art galleries, commercial agencies, and assigning magazine editors. “Books have legs,” Nick Larsen, the Managing Editor at Radius Books, tells us. “An artist never knows how a photobook might shape the trajectory of their career, which is part of what makes them an exciting project and a goal for many photographers.”
With this idea in mind, we put together this guide highlighting our favorite photobook publishers accepting submissions. You'll find something for everyone: a publisher devoted to niche urban stories, another known for high-end collectible editions that go for upwards of $1,000, and the publishing house that helped catapult Vivian Maier to worldwide stardom after the posthumous discovery of her work. We hope it serves as a point of departure as you look for the right publisher for your project.
