10 Award-Winning Photographers from the Month of January
Every month, the editors of Feature Shoot put together a roundup of standout award winners announced throughout the previous month, in hopes of shedding light on untold stories and giving you a sense of the kind of work making waves in the industry. January’s compilation might be the most diverse yet, featuring hard-hitting photojournalism, fine art landscapes, cutting-edge portraiture, and much more. Spanning underreported issues and novel approaches to classic genres, these journalists and artists caught our attention.
Aytek Çetin wins International Landscape Photographer of the Year
Aytek Çetin, an artist based in Turkey, has won the 8th International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition for his otherworldly vision of Cappadocia. “The 60-million-year-old story of fairy chimneys and the fact they have been home to different civilizations for tens of thousands of years makes Cappadocia extremely mysterious for me,” the artist says.
“If you are lucky, you can visit there during hazy, atmospheric conditions with a soft light pushing through at sunrise or sunset.” Çetin takes home a cash prize of US $5,000, a trophy, gear, and more. He will also be featured in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year photobook.
17th Edition of the Pollux Awards, juried by Julio Hirsch-Hardy, the Director of FotoNostrum Gallery and founder and publisher of FotoNostrum Magazine, has named Dominique Jean-Marie, aka Kano-Kano, as the Single Image winner in their Professional Category for a portrait from her series Your flesh used to swing in the Southern breeze.
“Your flesh used to swing in the southern breeze is a vibrant tribute to the sensibility and aesthetics of black culture,” the artist says. “After the series of tragic events that happened in America in recent years, my series is meant to be an emotional and physiological resurrection.” The work will be on view at FotoNostrum Gallery from October 13th to October 30, 2022.
Li Huaifeng wins the Global SinoPhoto awards
The overall winner of the Global SinoPhoto Awards 2021, a contest celebrating Chinese life and culture worldwide, is Li Huaifeng for the image The Dancing Dreams of a Mountain Girl. “As the poverty in rural China is alleviated, girls from the countryside gain the opportunity to learn to dance in the city,” the team shares. “This photograph captures a girl performing a dance for her grandmother when she returns home.” The Global SinoPhoto Awards exhibition opens on February 16th and runs through May 14th at The Museum of East Asian Art (MEAA) on Bennett Street in Bath.
